New Home…Sort Of

We drove to Maryland today, with the car stacked to the ceiling, leaving only small openings for humans and dogs. Luckily, it was only a three hour trip, the dogs fell asleep, and we had a Hootie & The Blowfish CD to pass the time. We are staying at the Homewood Suites by BWI Airport. We should be here through mid-December when Christmas break starts. Then we’ll spend three weeks bouncing from a friend’s apartment to a relative’s house and so on. But that’s for another time.
Our suite is pretty good - we have a 1 bedroom which is refreshing. Our last hotel room had an open loft with a bed; here we can actually close the door and keep the dogs out if we want. It’s nice when they don’t have total control of our lives. The bathroom was stocked with Neutragena toiletries. For some reason, this gave me a little thrill. You don’t see the name brands at Motel 6 (which is where we stay on our own dime). We also have a kitchen with everything but an oven. Seems strange to be to have a dishwasher and no oven, but oh well. I realize I cook most of our meals on the stove anyway. Plus, we got a toaster/toaster oven combo for the wedding shower. I don’t really know what kinds of things I can cook in it without setting it on fire, but it looks like we’re going to find out. If it goes up in flames, there’s always the George Forman grill.
This place has continental breakfast every morning and a little dinner buffet on weeknights. There’s an indoor pool, which is my favorite part. I think I should pick up a one piece bathing suit though – bikinis really don’t say “November” to me. Also, there’s a gym, a business center, a laundry room, and of course, HBO. Not doing too bad for a nomad.
Hopefully, we will get to exploring our surroundings soon. So far all I know is we are next to about fifty other hotels (it is actually called the “Hotel District”). I am a sucker for new cities, so I’m sure my camera will get a lot of use in the next month.
Just When I Thought I Was Safe…

After all that talk about Thanksgiving in New York, we just got word we are being sent to Baltimore on Tuesday. It’s cool because we will be there for a whole year, so we’ll actually have stability for a while. Plus it’s near other interesting places like Washington D.C. and the great state of Virginia, so I see roadtrips in our future. Still, I was just starting to look forward to that parade! But we are planning one more trip to NYC on Sunday which may include the Empire State Building, and New Year’s Eve in Times Square is still in the plans. So, watch out Maryland, here we come.
I have only been to Baltimore a few times, once earlier this year for an Orioles game (that was our second of six ballparks this year), and another time for a high school band competition when my best friend and I got lost and almost missed the bus home. I am excited to go there because as far as I can tell it is a nice mix of North and South, plus four friends from high school and college live in the area, as well as one of my cousins. Hooray, social life!
In other news, Johnny Drama chewed through the power cord to my laptop and now it won’t charge. Mr. Andrews just went out to get me a new one (what a guy, right?). I will immediately be coating it with Bitter Apple Spray. Take that, Johnny Drama! Go chew on something your own size.
I’ll return tomorrow with our regularly scheduled honeymoon post.
Commencing: Operation Organization

My husband has a job that requires that we move a lot. So far this year we have moved from Massachusetts to New Jersey, then while in New Jersey we have moved from a corporate apartment to a hotel, back to the apartment, and back to the hotel. Our scheduled move to Baltimore in November has been postponed until after the New Year, so now, as the New Jersey job is winding down, we are waiting to see where our next destination will be. The Southern states are looking like a strong possibility (yay, warm winter!), but we probably won’t know until the very last minute.
In order to be prepared for a moment’s notice move, we spent a good part of yesterday overhauling the storage space we have been keeping most of our stuff in since moving into the hotel (please note we knew about a day and half before we left that we had to be out of the apartment, so a good portion of our belongings were thrown into trash bags or half-torn boxes from Amazon). Five Rubbermaid tubs later, the storage unit was a work of art. I wish I had my camera because it was a beautiful sight to behold.
Sadly, after collecting a bunch of cool stuff from the bridal shower/wedding, we still have about two Ford Explorers worth of boxes to move, and we only own one Ford Explorer. To condense a little bit more, we bought a bunch of Space Bags. These are the bags you pack and then vaccuum all the air out of them, so your clothes and blankets and junk gets shrunk down to about 1/3 of it’s original size. Mr. Andrews was skeptical, but I have to say, these little things have revolutionized my luggage! Five suitcases, a duffle bag, a laundry basket, and a hamper’s worth of clothes have been sucked down to the size of just three suitcases (and, okay, a bag for Goodwill). Simply amazing! And really, kind of fun. I think I’m going to be able to just get rid of the other two suitcases, one with a broken zipper and the other with a broken handle. Hooray!
Because I am clearly so thrilled about this tiny little organizational miracle, I am really pumped up to get more organized throughout my life. Up to this point, the only skill I have really aquired in that department has been reducing the millions of magazines I subscribe to down to a managable level by tearing out the articles I want to save and stuffing them in a huge three ring binder. Other than that, nothing. To remedy this problem, I am picking up a bunch of book on cleaning, sorting, storing, solving, organization, and time management (I told you about the book problem). The first one is Good Things for Organizing from Martha Stewart Living. I have only flipped through it so far, but I know it will be good because I already want to move into a big old farm house and have an armoire in my mud room (Only Martha could make a person feel reasonable saying something like that)! There are a few others from Martha Stewart, plus a couple from Real Simple that look promising.
Being able to actually find the stuff I own – revolutionary!
