Wedding Bliss: Bridal Attire

The story of my wedding dress is a fairly short one. I bought the second dress I tried on and I didn’t try on anymore.

My mom, my sister, and I stopped into a hometown bridal shop, Creative Bridals in Braintree, MA. We didn’t even have an appointment – we were just checking it out on our way to the places we were really going to shop. I have passed by this place pretty much every single day growing up, and I had no idea they had an enormous wedding dressing room behind closed doors. It was cool!

They gave us a few minutes in the bridal room even though we didn’t have an appointment (good thing we got there right when they opened!) and that is all I needed. The first dress I tried was one of those mermaid dresses, which was nice until I tried on the second one. It was a brand new model, and they claimed I was the first one to try it on. It was by Moonlight. It was perfect. I loved the straps (no way I was going sleeveless, which cut down my options a bit) and the gathered bottom (trendy, yet sort of elegant) and the pretty beads. Both my mom and my sister cried. It was pretty much the cheapest dress there by five hundred dollars, but it didn’t look cheap. I bought it in ivory right then and there.

Creative Bridals has an in-house seamstress so she did all the alterations as well. Handy!

I wasn’t going to do any kind of head gear, but my mom wanted me to have a veil. So we got one to match, with a pearl-adorned comb to hold it on. I am glad I got one, because I think it completed the outfit. It took it from this:

To this:

Oh yeah. That’s so bridal.

I went simple on everything else – pearl earrings that my aunt bought me for my birthday at JC Penney, a gold necklace with three pearls from The Derby Street Shoppes, and a pair of $20 gold shoes from Marshalls that no one saw anyway (replaced by a pair of pink Old Navy flip flops for the reception). I was supposed to borrow one of my mom’s bracelets, but we both forgot. I had nothing borrowed! But luckily it still worked out. I think I looked good. My husband thought I looked good, too! And one of my single aunt’s already has dibs on the dress for her wedding. Not bad!

Ticketless

Mr. Andrews and I had tickets to a taping of The Daily Show today, but it was cancelled because of the WGA Writers’s Strike. Not really a big deal, since we are a lot farther from New York than we were when I booked the tickets, but it is the latest in a disturbing trend: TV shows clearly don’t want me in their audience.

I had tickets to On Air with Ryan Seacrest way back in May 2004, but it got cancelled the day I was supposed to go to the show. I had tickets to Montel this past August but they changed the show to an all teenage audience about a week before. I got in line too late for The Dr. Phil Show (couldn’t find anything to wear!), so the studio was already filled. Ditto with The Rachael Ray Show in September (it was pouring). The one shining exception is our trip to the Tonight Show with Jay Leno in July 2002 where Mr Andrews and I, as well as our two friends, Miss Smith and Mrs. Nelson, had front row seats. Of course, we sat outside NBC studios from 10 AM until the show started at 4PM. That should have been a lesson to me. Get there hours early! That’s the key!

Rachael Ray of Wax
My sister & I missed the real Rachael, but we did see her made of wax

I supposedly get V.I.P. tickets to another taping of Rachael Ray because I got shut out last time, plus I’ve requested audience tickets to The Martha Stewart Show and will be calling The Oprah Show on December 4 to try against logic to get tickets for a January taping. If I get graced with tickets for any of these, you will find me on the sidewalk before dawn, because, by gosh, I’m going to get in! Unless, of course, it gets cancelled. Or I do not fit their demographic for the day.

Oprah & Me
Wax Oprah and Me (I didn’t see wax Jon Stewart)

Maybe I should stop trying to be in studio audiences. I could actually just watch this stuff on T.V. I don’t even need cable! But Miss Smith and our friend, Miss Brown, were in the audience at The Ellen DeGeneres Show once and got a new coffee maker and a new vacuum cleaner. And so I persevere. Maybe I should just start my own show. They probably couldn’t keep me out of that.

Baby, It’s Cold Outside

We got our chihuahua, Johnny Drama, in April, when Spring was blooming and the weather was warming. He enjoyed going outside to frolick in the grass or roll in the dirt, running from end to end of our community dog park. As the winter has crept closer, however, poor little Drama, weighing all of six pounds with a closely cropped coat of fur, has had all the fun taken out of outside by the cold. I think we need to get the little guy a sweater.

I didn’t want to be that woman, the one who dresses up her dog in fancy outfits and jeweled collars. Especially since he is a boy dog – chihuahuas tend to get feminized, and we wanted to let him be masculine (we actually did get him a spiked collar for just this purpose). But I think he actually needs clothes to stay warm. Sonny, our mutt, can brave the cold. He really likes playing the snow. But Drama shivers in 40 degree weather and whines until he can come back in and bundle up in our bedspread. So, I think we will be venturing into dog apparel before the snow comes, maybe this weekend. Hopefully Petsmart will have something for less than the swanky online pet stores that sell parkas and argyles. I would really like to find something for under $50 – my coat didn’t even cost that much!

Operation Organization: Real Simple Solutions

The latest book I turned to for organizational advice was Real Simple Solutions. It looked pretty neat but I was not expecting to learn so many cool things. Seriously, this stuff is groundbreaking! More than 180 pages of home (and office) making gold. It has information on everything from how to stock a pantry, how to set a table, and how to load a dishwasher, to how to stock your office desk drawer, how to paint a room, and how to properly hang lights on the Christmas tree. Other people may know how to do these things perfectly, but so far in life, I have been mostly haphazard. So this book is really for me! It is also veritable treasure trove of handy dandy tips and tricks on cleaning, dressing, eating, entertaining and decorating. All of that in just one book. How great is that?

Some of my favorite ideas:

  •  Cut pizza with a pair of scissors so you don’t have to keep cutting back and forth
  • Freeze aloe vera gel in ice cube trays for sunburn relief
  • Keep tall boots upright in the closet by putting a one liter plastic soda bottle inside
  • For extra cooler space, fill up the washing machine with water and ice to keep beverages cold
  • Avoid nail holes in the wall by hanging pictures with velcro
  • Remove pet hair from upholstery with a damp rubber dishwashing glove – the hair will cling right to it
  • Use Lifesavers to hold birthday candles in place

Now all I need is some tips on organizing books about organizing!

Honeymooning: Day 3

The third day of our honeymoon was when we finally made it to the highly touted Hemingway House.

Honeymoon etc. 307

Honeymoon etc. 302

It is, of course, famous for being the home of Ernest Hemingway in the 1930’s, but also for the sixty or so cats on the property. All are descendants of Hemingway’s cat, Snowball, and many are polydactyl (six-toed).

Honeymoon etc. 301

Snowball Jr?

You can look around the house on your own for free, but we decided to take the tour because we didn’t really know what we were looking at. I hate to admit it, but I’m not really sure I ever read Hemingway. I think I was supposed to read Farewell to Arms once, in high school or in college, but I really am pretty sure I didn’t read it. I probably read the Cliff Notes. I am a pop-culture reader, a Stephen King kind of gal. I should be better, but I’m not. So we took the tour. It was $11 each and it was a really good tour.

We went through each room of the house, learning about Hemingway’s wives, his history, and his life in Key West. We also learned about the house itself, which had a second floor bathroom with running water (rare on the island at the time), and a very expensive swimming pool.

There was also a drinking fountain for the cats made from a urinal taken from a local bar, as well as a cat cemetery!

Kitty Grave Yard

It was all surprisingly interesting. After the guided tour, we were allowed to go individually to see Hemingway’s writing studio.

Honeymoon etc. 296

Overall, it was very cool. Highly recommended!

After all that education, we took a walk to find mile marker 0 on U.S. Highway 1. As roadtrippers, we are kind of highway nerds, and were very excited to see this sign. Can’t you tell?

Honeymoon etc. 320

Honeymoon etc. 318

We also got a picture of us both together at a sign at the courthouse across the street.

Honeymoon etc. 315

That night, we decided to have dinner at the Hard Rock Cafe. One of the touristy things we do in different places is to eat at all the Hard Rocks we can find, and Mr. Andrews collects the pins. They actually had a marriage-themed pin there! So that was cool. Food was good, too.

Then, finally, it was onto the first activity we had actually scheduled before hand – a Key West Ghost Tour! I love ghosts and ghost stories (remember how I like Stephen King?) so I was really excited for this. There was a huge tour group, so it seems like a pretty popular event. Our fancy dressed guide was fun, and took us around town hunting for spirits.

Honeymoon etc. 340

We went to a bunch of hotels and buildings rumored to be haunted, and heard stories of everything from a man who married a dead woman to a possessed doll named Robert. We took tons of photos looking for “orbs” but sadly, I didn’t get any. We did get to stand at the door of the building below, haunted by fire victims, and both Mr. Andrews and I felt the door shaking, and I saw a flash of light that may have been a ghost. Cool! I was so intrigued, I made Mr. Andrews go back there after the tour was over. We ate some ice cream on the sidewalk across the street, then stood against the door one more time. It vibrated again. Whoa.

Honeymoon etc. 353

Of course, afterwards I was so freaked out that I was afraid to go to sleep! But I still wanted to go back. I know I can see a ghost if I am persistant! Maybe next time…

We wrapped up the night at Captain Tony’s Saloon. They have yummy frozen rum drinks – mmm, Pirate Punch.

Capt. Tony's Saloon

Day 3 was a huge success! Stay tuned for Day 4, when we take our trip to the Dolphin Playground and snorkel with the sharks!

This Thanksgiving, being roughly 8 hours south of my family, 8 hours north of Mr. Andrews’s family, and inconveniently far from the Macy’s parade, we had our Thanksgiving dinner at Medieval Times. Neither one of us had been to anything like this, so we didn’t know what to expect. But to tell you the truth, it was pretty awesome.

Medieval Times, already decked out for Christmas

It was surprisingly crowded – I was a sort of expecting that we would be the only two people there. But there was a long line by the time the King, The Princess, and the king’s right hand man (aka guy who told us what to do) came out to greet us and start the show. We were assigned to the green team – indicated by our stylish green cardboard crowns – which ruled because the Green Knight was a mercenary bad-ass and was the most fun to root for. Not like the skinny, hippie-looking Red Knight (who was our knight’s rival).

thanksgiving2007 006thanksgiving2007 007

They did an intro into the whole show, explaining that the king’s brother had been killed in the war and they needed to have a knight competition in order to choose a new heir.

Medieval M.C.

Then they did lots of horse tricks and bird tricks with a hawk and elaborate intros of each of the six knights (Green, Red, Blue, Yellow, Red and Yellow, & Black and White) to keep us entertained while we ate.

The meal was fun. They served everything on pewter plates (which we were strictly forbidden from banging, as we would scare the horses) and we didn’t have any utensils. Yay, eating with our fingers!

thanksgiving2007 014

thanksgiving2007 087

The menu is set – everybody gets the same thing. We ate:

  • Garlic Bread
  • Vegetable Soup (drunk straight from the bowl)
  • Roasted Chicken
  • Spare Rib
  • Baked Potato
  • “Castle Pastry” (an Apple Turnover)
  • Pepsi

There was also a barmaid who served other drinks in funky cups (my favorite had flashing lights), but we just stuck with what we had already paid for. Everything was really good!

thanksgiving2007 090

My crown was a bit too big…

The main events started after the main course. The knights came out to compete in little games, like collecting rings on their lances, or picking up flags while riding on their horses and tossing them back anfd forth between riders. It was pretty entertaining.

thanksgiving2007 099

But the it was time to fight! There was sort fighting and mace fighting, hand to hand combat, and of course jousting!

thanksgiving2007 161

It was clearly choreographed and corny, but we had lots of fun.

thanksgiving2007 154

It was great to cheer and boo. Mr. Andrews, a veteran SEC football fan, is an expert at cheering with years of face painting, jumping, yelling, and screaming for his team under his belt. This made the experience all the more amusing, and came in handy, too. I couldn’t seem to get a good picture of the Green Knight so Mr. Andrews yelled to him and he looked right at me. I got the shot. I complimented Mr. Andrews on his good use of voice. His response: “This is not my first time.”

thanksgiving2007 129

The Green Knight

So, after all the fighting, there was a big surprise ending. Very showy. It was tons of fun, really. I am very glad we did it.

thanksgiving2007 228

So is jousting and finger foods our new Thanksgiving tradition? We’ll see…

DVD Deals!

Today, Mr. Andrews and I went to the mall around noon, just to be part of things on Black Friday, mostly to be spectators. Instead, we ended up getting sucked into it all when we found super bargains on long coveted DVD sets. We basically spent hundreds of dollars on ourselves when everyone else was being generous to others. I’d be kind of disappointed with myself if I wasn’t so excited about all the new stuff we get to watch. And it wasn’t even that crowded (I guess everyone else went at 4 am this year)!

At Best Buy, we found:

At FYE, we found:

At Circuit City, we found:

Plus, I just found out that Veronica Mars – The Complete Second Season is $14.99 at Target through tomorrow, although that my just be a rumor. My wallet hopes it is!

I will get around to chronicling day three of our honeymoon and our wild and crazy Medieval Thanksgiving whenever I can tear myself away from the TV…

Wedding Bliss: Thank You Notes

We got our thank you notes today. I know, I am so late with these! But everyone keeps insisting we have a year, so four and some odd months isn’t completely awful. We had elaborate ideas for these, planning a take on Mr. & Mrs. Smith – we even got photographed in that pose Brad and Angelina did on the movie poster. But it got complicated and we didn’t want to delay any longer, so finally we decided to just pick our favorite shot from all the wedding photography from A Fine Image and have that made into cards via Pictage. Here they are:

Thank You 1

Thank You 3

Thank You 4

So, to all those generous souls who gave us wedding gifts – your thank yous are coming! Thanks!

Avoiding The Christmas Rush

Now that it is almost Thanksgiving, I feel okay about Christmas gift shopping. Problem is I hate shopping. I like looking a lot, I just really dislike buying things. Especially crowded shopping. I don’t do crowds. And sales. I am so bad at bargain hunting. Thank God, once again, for the internet. They have cooler stuff there anyway.

Here is some stuff I am thinking of buying:

Clinique Happy Custom Bottle ($52) - You can put a picture of your choice on a bottle of perfume.  Way better than your picture on a mouse pad or a mug, right?

Virgil’s Root Beer Keg ($15 + $10 s&h) – My stepfather loves root beer, he’ll really love 5 liters of it. And he doesn’t drink, so this is really his only opportunity to have fun with a keg. They have cream soda, too.

Felix Doolittle Personalized Book Plates (25 for $40) – Saw these both in O Magazine and on the Martha Stewart Show. There are a lot of readers in my family, and I think these are so pretty and cute. I’ll buy a few hard cover books and put a book plate in each one. Then I’ll give the rest of them so they can put them in the books of their choice.

Robeez Holiday Baby Shoes ($27.95) – Super cute for the baby girls in the family. Christmas is actually a little late for these, but maybe I’ll give them early.

A Year of Cookie Cutters from Crate & Barrel ($24.95) - A nice gift for bakers, at a good price – and it keeps on giving with each seasonal batch of cookies!

Star Wars X-Wing Fighter Vehicle ($44.95) – Comes with Luke Skywalker figure and a DragonSnake, it’s coveted by the little boys and the big ones who still love Star Wars (there are so many!)

Julie Doll from American Girl ($87) – The older girls love American Girl, and I love that this one is from 1970’s San Francisco. Way cooler than Victorian times.

HBO Holiday Ornaments ($12.99)- Tree trimmings for lovers of Sex And The City, The Sopranos, and Entourage – which pretty much includes everyone

James Bond Ultimate Collector’s Set ($216.99) – 42 Discs for men who like movies

Family Guy – Freakin’ Party Pack ($104.99) – Now that everyone under the age of fifty loves this show, I could totally buy this for all remaining family and friends.

Wedding Photos from Pictage ($30 for 8×10) – It’s not often that our whole family is photographed together in non-embarrasing clothes/poses/situation. Enter my wedding. Our photographer has all our pictures on Pictage.com until December 7. Fine photos for everyone!

Hey, that was easy!
